Cliff Hurst primarily teaches entrepreneurship and social entrepreneurship. He not only teaches entrepreneurship; he has lived it. Entrepreneurship requires both a mindset and a skillset. It involves a way of thinking and a way of acting that can bring value to any college student, studying any academic mindset.

Cliff takes a special interest in people who apply business principles to doing good in the world. These are often know as social entrepreneurs. Their companies can be for-profit, not-for-profit, or a hybrid known as benefit corporations.

Cliff's research interest centers on a value theory known as formal axiology, developed by the late philosopher Dr. Robert S. Hartman. Hartman envisioned a coming "third stage of capitalism" in which people – in their unique individuality – are at the center of the business enterprise. Cliff's aim is to develop that concept more fully. Cliff has recently edited three volumes of Hartman's previously unpublished manuscripts.
